Reindeer Sleigh Ride or Farm Visit: How Far Do You Actually Ride?
How far the reindeer sleigh goes on each Rovaniemi outing, from a 400 m loop to a 3 km forest route, which rides depend on the snow, and which outings have no ride at all.
The ride on a Rovaniemi reindeer outing is anything from a 400 m loop around the farm to a 3 km route through the forest, and the short ones often depend on the snow. For a real ride at a farm, book Beyond Arctic’s Local Reindeer Farm Visit with Sleigh Ride, which goes 2 km and lets you feed the reindeer afterwards, from US$133 a person (checked November 2026).
The option with the 2-km ride cost US$206 a person on each of the seven dates we read between 27 November 2026 and 17 February 2027. Hotel pickup, warm clothing and winter boots are included, and free cancellation runs until 24 hours before.
Every ride, by distance

The loops at the farm: 400 to 500 m
The short rides go once round a track near the pens. One guest on Arctic Photo Experience's farm visit put theirs at about five minutes (March 2025), another in January 2026 called it a ride of minutes, and a few wished it had been longer. The point of these outings is the time with the herders and the reindeer; the ride is the extra.
They are also the rides most likely to be called off. Arctic Photo Experience's 400 m ride runs only when there is sufficient snow, and a guest on 10 November 2025 had no ride for that reason. Wonderlapland's sled rides are not guaranteed, with no refund when the snow does not allow one that day. AMG Travel's ride runs from mid-November to mid-April.
Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park's Reindeer Manor visit has the lowest price of these, US$97, for a 500 m ride. The same 500 m ride comes inside its combinations with huskies, the shorter one and the one with a snowmobile hour.
The forest rides: 1.5 to 3 km
From 1.5 km up, the ride leaves the farm and goes into the forest. Santa Claus Holiday Village Safaris puts its 2 to 2.5 km at about 40 minutes and Santa Claus Reindeer its 2-3 km route at about 30.
How you ride differs too. On Apukka Resort Oy's journey the sleighs move at a walking pace with the guide walking alongside the reindeer, and the guides seat people so the load is even. On Santa Claus Holiday Village Safaris' ride the guides lead the caravan and you sit wrapped in a blanket on a reindeer hide. A guest on Beyond Arctic’s ride in February 2025 had expected a short ride and found it “quite lengthy”; another, in March 2026, found it slow but liked the landscape.
Arctic Photo Experience's own longer option, the Small-Group Reindeer Safari, gives its ride as 40 to 60 minutes rather than a distance. It cost US$217 a person on 20 January 2027 and needs at least two people.
No ride at all
Apukka Resort Oy's walk with reindeer replaces the sleigh with 2 km on foot beside them. Johanna's reindeer hideaway is a private visit inside the enclosure with lichen to feed them by hand. Unari Lake Reindeer Farm, 90 km north of Rovaniemi, takes you through the pasture in a sled pulled by a snowmobile, not by reindeer, and feeds the whole herd.
