Farm visit or sleigh ride: what a safari means here
Nearly every outing here starts in Rovaniemi or at Santa Claus Village, eight kilometres north of the city centre, and drives out to a farm. What you actually do there varies more than the titles suggest.
Some are farm visits first. You meet the herders, stand among the reindeer, hear how herding works and have a hot drink by the fire in a kota, a wooden hut. The sleigh ride is a short loop of 400 or 500 m, and on several of them it depends on the snow. Others are sleigh rides first: 1.5 to 3 km through the forest, about 30 to 40 minutes in the sleigh where a time is given, with the farm around it.
Then there are the outings with no sleigh at all: a walk beside the reindeer, or a private visit to a home farm where you feed them lichen by hand.
The farm visit with a photographer, start to finish
Arctic Photo Experience collects you from your hotel if it is within 10 km of Rovaniemi; further out there is a surcharge. The van ride to the farm takes about 25 minutes. Herders meet you there and you spend about two hours with them and the reindeer while a photographer goes round with you. After the tour the photographer puts together a set of the pictures; the raw files are not part of it. The programme changes with the season.
In winter, when there is enough snow, a 400 m sleigh ride is part of the visit. Without enough snow there is no sledding, and a guest on 10 November 2025 wrote that the ride could not take place for that reason. Several reviewers say the ride itself is short: about five minutes, one guest wrote in March 2025.
Check dates for the farm visit
The listing has a second option, the Small-Group Reindeer Safari, with “an extended 40–60-minute reindeer sleigh ride” and edited photos. On 20 January 2027 it left at 10:30 AM, lasted 3 hours and cost US$217 a person for two; it needs at least two people, so a solo traveller could not book it on 17 February. The farm visit itself left at 9:00 AM on those dates and on 30 November, 15 December and 3 February, and cost US$139 a person on each. 27 November and 10 December 2026 had no availability at all when we read the calendar.
The longer sleigh rides
If you want a proper ride rather than a loop, look at the outings with a ride of 1.5 km or more.
Beyond Arctic's farm visit drives 35 minutes from Rovaniemi for a 2-km ride on a sleigh pulled by reindeer, after which you feed them. Warm clothing, winter boots, a hot drink and snacks in a warm shelter are included, and the edited photos come a few days later. The listing does not allow touching or riding the animals. It shows from US$133, but the option with the 2-km ride cost US$206 a person on every date we read.
Apukka Resort Oy's 2-3 km ride (US$211) goes through the forest at a walking pace, with the guide walking alongside the reindeer, and ends with a hot drink by the fire. Transfers run from the city centre or Santa Claus Village, 35 minutes each way, and the thermal overall, boots, woollen socks and mittens are included.
Santa Claus Holiday Village Safaris' sled ride covers 2 to 2.5 km in about 40 minutes, with you wrapped in a blanket on a reindeer hide while the guides lead the caravan. Arctic GM Experiences OY's 2.5 km ride picks up at your accommodation in a group of at most 8, and Wonderlapland's 1.5 km forest ride charges EUR 10 a person extra for an overall and boots.
Easy Travel's Lapland Reindeer Safari from Rovaniemi is US$237 (checked November 2026) for a 1.5 km sled ride with hotel pickup. In bad weather it runs a shorter 500 m route and refunds EUR 25 an adult and EUR 20 a child.
The short rides for less
Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park's Reindeer Experience with Sleigh Ride is the lowest-priced sleigh ride on GetYourGuide here at US$97: a 20-minute drive to Reindeer Manor, a 500 m sledge ride, herders who answer questions, and hot juice and biscuits in the hut. Its 1,586 reviews average 4.2. AMG Travel's farm visit (US$111) collects from your hotel, spends an hour on the farm with a ride of 400 to 500 m, and gives its sleigh season as mid-November to mid-April.
A walk or a quiet visit instead of a ride
Apukka Resort Oy's walk with reindeer is 2 km through the forest on foot beside the reindeer, with black pot coffee afterwards, for US$121. Johanna's reindeer hideaway is a 1.5-hour private visit to a home farm 20 minutes from the centre, where you hand-feed lichen and sit by a fire inside the enclosure. White Winter Lapland's farm visit and walk (US$112, checked November 2026) ends with a walk with your own reindeer.
Reindeer with huskies or a snowmobile
Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park's husky and reindeer visit gives you a 500 m ride behind each at Reindeer Manor, and its longer version adds an hour on a snowmobile, for which the driver needs a class B licence. Easy Travel's reindeer and husky safari (US$249, checked November 2026) has a 500 m reindeer ride and a 2 km husky ride. In all three the reindeer ride is 500 m.
What reviewers mention
Arctic Photo Experience’s farm visit has 315 reviews on GetYourGuide with an average of 4.9, and three of them give three stars or fewer. The one of those with text, from February 2025, says several pickup groups were put together into about 40 people on the farm. Other guests mention larger groups at the same farm on the same morning, and a few would have liked a longer ride. The five-star reviews talk about the guides, the photos and feeding the reindeer at the end.
Before you book
- Snow. The 400 m ride on Arctic Photo Experience’s farm visit runs only when there is enough snow. Wonderlapland's farm visit has the same condition and does not refund a ride the snow rules out.
- Pickup. Arctic Photo Experience collects within 10 km of Rovaniemi and charges extra further out. Unari Lake Reindeer Farm, 90 km north, includes no transport and has no bus connection.
- Mobility. Arctic Photo Experience’s farm visit, Apukka Resort Oy's ride and Santa Claus Holiday Village Safaris' ride are not for wheelchair users.
- Dates. On the dates we read, the farm visit had nothing on sale on 27 November or 10 December 2026, while 30 November and 15 December were on sale; check the calendar before you plan around a day.
- Cancelling. Every GetYourGuide outing here can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before. Nordic Odyssey's farm visit on Viator is the exception among the Viator outings: all sales are final.
